The crisp air of a beautiful fall morning set the stage for a heartwarming celebration of inclusivity and independence at the 6th Annual MICC Independence 5K on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Held at Donaldson Park in Richfield, Minnesota, near MICC's campus, this event proved to be a tremendous success, radiating positivity and community spirit.

The primary aim of this event was to bring together a vibrant community in support of autistic and neurodivergent adults. And it did just that, with every moment embodying the spirit of unity and empowerment.

The event began on a high note with Graham, an MICC Community participant and co-emcee, taking the microphone. His heartfelt words resonated with the crowd as he shared his remarkable journey. Graham spoke passionately about his experiences at MICC, where he learned crucial life skills like transportation and independent living. He touched on the importance of these skills in his life, the enduring friendships he had formed, and how he discovered a career he truly enjoys.
Throughout the event, MICC participants, staff, and supporters lined the route, enthusiastically cheering on the racers as they crossed the finish line. It was a heartening display of support and encouragement. But they weren't the only ones. Residents from the neighborhood also joined in, lining the race path to offer their cheers, applause, and a sense of local pride.

From the moment of registration until the race's triumphant conclusion, there was an infectious energy in the air. The event was a testament to the power of community, where smiling faces, lively conversations, and an overwhelming sense of unity filled the park. It felt like a homecoming, and the event was indeed a wonderful return to the magic of MICC's Homecoming weekend.

This year, we achieved our largest-ever turnout. A total of 237 walkers and runners, joined by 50 dedicated volunteers, made this event truly special. The sense of community and support was palpable, and we couldn't be more grateful for the incredible turnout.

While we made an impressive effort, we're not done yet. During the event, we raised $12,355. Our goal is $15,000, and there's still time to contribute, as donations will be accepted through the end of the month. Every donation helps us inch closer to our goal of empowering neurodivergent individuals.

Amy Gudmestad, MICC’s Chief Executive Officer, shared her enthusiasm, saying, "Homecoming weekend is an exhilarating experience! I love witnessing our families, participants, and the MICC Community gather as we come together and have an amazing time. The strength of our supportive community is truly inspiring, and it warms my heart to see us unite in such a wonderful way."

A big thank you to our generous sponsors for this year's Independence 5K: Marathon Petroleum, Autism Advocacy & Law Center, and Phil & Jill Lighty, and thank you to Megan Stezka Photo for capturing the event.
